Benefits of Dermapen

The Dermapen is a micro-needling device that is safe on all skin types and most skin conditions. The Dermapen has multiple settings that can adjust to thick or thin skin types or areas making it affective on most surfaces of the body. It’s intended to stimulate skin to rebuild collagen and elastin, promotes skin tightening, diminish the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks, promote wound healing, improves fine lines and wrinkles, minimizes pore size as well as increase skin’s metabolism and absorption of active ingredients. This procedure has little down time and can be combined with different treatments to get optimal results.

Dermapen offers a solution for all skin conditions that clients might seek treatment for: wrinkles and fine lines, acne scarring, stretch marks, wound healing stimulation, and skin tightening, lifting and rejuvenation. This means you can offer a broader range of treatments for your clients. Dermapen treatments complement other treatment options already offering clients, chemical peels, IPL, Micro-dermabrasion and laser skin tightening. This will greatly increase their effectiveness.

Dermapen is a unique microneedling device that has quickly become the innovative Leader in Anti Aging treatments. The Dermapen was recently awarded the Best Anti Aging device at The Aesthetic Show in Las Vegas. Due to this accolade many practitioners are asking where exactly the Dermapen fits into their practice.

The Dermapen holds a unique place in today’s aesthetic practice because it can be used alone as well as in combination with most any other treatment currently used in your practice. We have had customers use it in conjunction with light chemical peels, hydrating masks, ultrasonic facials, galvanic treatments, phototherapy, platelette rich plasma just to name a few.

Questions from the Clients

Can you receive a DermaPen treatment if pregnant?

Skin needling is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women due to a number of minor reasons. The needles produce micro-injuries which trigger the natural wound healing response. This wound healing and production of new collagen requires vitamins and nutrients which would otherwise be needed for the baby so is suggested to not be used during pregnancy.

Another minor reason is simply increasing the chances of infection which is never a good idea when pregnant.
However this is just a precaution and any doctor can carry out the treatment at their own risk/ judgment

How does the DermaPen work?

The concept of skin needling is based on the skin’s ability to repair itself whenever it encounters physical damage such as cuts, burns and other abrasions. Immediately after an injury occurs our skin dissolves old damaged tissue and replaces it with new. Skin needling allows for controlled induction of the skin’s self repair mechanism by creating micro “injuries” in the skin which triggers new collagen synthesis, yet does not pose the risk of permanent scarring. The result is smoother, firmer and younger looking skin. DermaPen and SkinMed are experts in optimising this process to improve results and minimise complications and discomfort. How is the treatment administered?

Skin needling procedures are performed in a safe and precise manner with the use of the sterile DermaPen needle head. The procedure is normally completed within 30-60 minutes depending on the required treatment and anatomical site.

Before the procedure commences a topical anaesthetic or local block should be applied to the client’s skin to ensure their comfort and a painless experience. After the skin is numbed, the practitioner gently moves the DermaPen over the client’s skin to puncture the epidermis layers of the skin and create miniscule sub-cutaneous injuries. These microscopic wounds stimulate new collagen deposition which may last for up to a year, yet they close within less than an hour.

What is the skins appearance after the treatment?

After the procedure the client’s skin will be red and flushed in appearance in a similar way to moderate sunburn. The client will also experience skin tightness and mild sensitivity to touch on the area being treated. This will diminish greatly after a few hours following treatments and within the next 24 hours the skin will be completely healed. After 3 days there is barely any evidence that the procedure has taken place.

How quickly are results visible?

Visible results of skin rejuvenation are generally seen after just 6-8 weeks following procedure and improve further over time. A course of DermaPen sessions, is usually recommended to achieve optimum results; however skin improvement is noticeable after just one treatment. Clients should be encouraged to use the SkinMed range of products for both pre and post treatment. This will encourage better results and faster healing.

Is the DermaPen safe?

Skin needling does not involve injections and therefore allergic reactions and side-effects are unlikely to occur. It is minimally invasive, involves minimal downtime (circa 24hrs), rapid healing and requires simple after-care.

What topical treatments can be used along with the DermaPen?

The DermaPen will induce collagen synthesis on its own, but skin improvements is significantly enhanced by combining skin needling treatments with the topical application of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid stimulating products such as SkinMed’s Terproline Professional and Fillast. Management of Superoxide free radical generation is important as this can exacerbate erythema and PIH risk. Standard anti-oxidants do not work on superoxide and one needs to use Synchrovit C containing superoxide dismutase.

Terproline Professional was researched in Burns Units with published studies in vastly improving hypertrophic scars. Further research with full facial resurfacing lasers (10 days after scabbing) showed pain scores were reduced by 50% and also red skin returned completely normal (using erythema probes) in 3 weeks as opposed to 10 weeks in the untreated group. Also elastin and collagen III development was enhanced for a more uniform, elastic and youthful skin. Imagine how this could help DermaPen procedures. Boosting hyaluronic acid production using Fillast serums and creams is important pre and post treatment. High hyaluronic acid leads to better collagen and elastin structure and reduced collagen binding. Also increased moisture control reduces post procedural complications and plumps up the skin. To learn more about recommended pre and post treatments please talk with the consultant carrying out the procedure or give us a call.

What are the indications for having a DermaPen treatment?

Skin needling is especially effective for ageing concerns such as wrinkles, lines, folds and crows feet. Because collagen is produced, scars and stretch marks can also improve from treatments especially indented acne scars or chicken pox scars. Pigmentation issues can be helped including hyperpigmentation as well as Hypo-pigmentation, although pre treatment assessment and preparation here is essential. General lack of skin radiance, skin firmness and compactness are also an indication for skin needling treatments and visible improvements can be seen.

What are the contraindications of skin needling treatments?

Contraindications and precautions include; keloid or raised scarring; history of eczema, psoriasis and other chronic conditions; history of actinic (solar) keratosis; history of Herpes Simplex infections; history of diabetes; presence of raised moles, warts or any raised lesions on targeted area. Absolute contraindications include; scleroderma, collagen vascular diseases or cardiac abnormalities; Rosacea and blood clotting problems; active bacterial or fungal infection; immuno-suppression; scars less than 6 months old; and facial fillers in the past 6 months.

The 2nd treatment involves using the Dermapen at a depth that will give you the sensation of tickling and numbing cream is not needed. Neither method should draw blood.

You may find temporary redness of the skin for and hour or so, or possibly or a day, depending upon the age of the skin and treatment depth.

We recommend you use of specially formulated creams before and after a Dermapen treatment as outlined to the Clinician.

How does the DermaPen work?

As the Dermapen stamps over your skin, it creates micro-point punctures in the skin, the majority of which are simply pushing your pores open temporarily. This is perceived by the body as damage, which stimulates the release of growth factors that trigger the production of collagen and elastin. Your skin reacts to any injury by initiating the healing process. You encourage your skin to continue healing through this micro-needling process.

Your skin normally assumes that scars, stretch marks and wrinkles are repaired, but with the Dermapen auto-stamp micro-needling treatments, the skin is tricked into repairing itself. The process of micro-needling skin remodeling can go on for months after each Dermapen treatment. Results can be seen within a week or even a few days. Your skin naturally heals itself every 45 days, so with a little micro-needling stimulation changes can be dramatic and fast.
